2001 Season

Holland Harvesting – 2001 Season

The 2001 season got off to an extremely slow start.  Due to poor seeding conditions in Texas, the wheat was planted very late, then suffered through a colder than normal winter.  The majority of it was destroyed and they collected insurance and disaster payments on these acres.  Unfortunately, custom harvester’s do not benefit from any such payments.  We must maintain the equipment and manpower necessary to harvest our acres year after year, but when disaster strikes there are no programs for us, even if we had been cutting the effected acres for years.

When we did get started, both our stops in Oklahoma cut at the same time.  Although we don’t like to be split at the beginning, it all worked out fine.  As we progressed into Kansas and Nebraska,  we were fortunate to have some very good stops, which helped make up for the poor start and end to the wheat season.  Northeast ND and Northern MN was also non-existent as farmer’s were forced to take preventive planting payments on many acres of spring wheat due to the cold, wet spring.  Although nation-wide there were record low wheat acres, still the commodity prices remained poor.  This year we will again be faced with high fuel prices, and insurance increases of  20-30%.

Because of the spring wheat harvest fizzling out early, we were home in the yard most of September, with plenty of time to get switched over for fall corn and bean harvest, and kept busy doing extra maintenance on trucks and heads.  Once fall harvest got started, we had good weather, and a couple of employees from past years  returned to help out until we finished.

All in all, we still had a successful year, as we survived and will be heading out for the 2002 season.  There are many custom harvesters that will not be and are quitting…
